Behind the Scenes
Go behind the scene to see how we’re working to make workplace health and safety clear, practical, and accessible for new and young workers.

Our journey
SmartMove is an online platform developed by WorkSafe as part of the SafetyLine initiative to build awareness of work health and safety (WHS) among young people and new workers.
For over 20 years, it has been freely available online, helping young and new workers prepare for the world of work. We know starting a job can bring unique physical and mental health risks, especially for those with less experience or confidence.
SmartMove offers a practical way for young and new workers to learn about potential hazards, understand their rights and responsibilities, and be better prepared to stay safe at work. WorkSafe is committed to creating greater WHS awareness through this initiative.
Our mission
Keeping young and new workers safe at work is our core mission. We believe that making WHS knowledge part of everyday learning helps prepare people to work safety and confidently.
SmartMove encourages all young and new workers to see WHS as an essential part of their preparation for employment.
To support this, SmartMove is:
- designed to address the national competency unit BSBWHS211– Contribute to health and safety of self and others
- aligned with the syllabuses and support materials for each level of the Career & Enterprise courses of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority WA
- based on the Guiding principles for health and safety education for students in transition from school to work
- designed to support WHS elements addressed in the Student work placement guide (2007)
- informed by industry knowledge and evidence-based practice
- developed with expert input from subject matter experts to ensure suitability, industry relevance, and legal compliance
- designed to deliver industry-specific WHS training before entering the workplace
- designed to deliver industry-specific WHS training before entering the workplace
Meet SAMM
Meet SAMM, your guide through the SmartMove program and a practical tool you can use to assess risk at work.
SAMM is here to help young people and new workers navigate workplace health and safety with confidence, making sure you understand the risks, your responsibilities and rights, and how to work safely in any industry.
SAMM is an acronym that helps you remember the steps for managing health and safety risks:
- S – Spot the hazard
- A – Assess the risk
- M – Make the changes
- M – Monitor and follow-up
For you
SmartMove is designed with you in mind — whether you’re just starting work, changing roles, or learning about workplace health and safety for the first time. Our goal is to help you recognise risks, understand your rights and responsibilities, and feel confident and prepared for work in any industry.
We hope you enjoy your learning experience with us.
Kind regards,
The WorkSafe SmartMove team
